Overview
The English for Specific Academic Purposes (ESAP) unit at Â鶹Íø houses courses designed to support students’ development of academic communication skills required within their respective disciplines. Embedded within diploma and degree programmes, ESAP courses ensure that language development is closely aligned with students’ fields of study, strengthening both academic performance and professional readiness. Students learn to engage with subject-specific materials, express ideas with clarity, and participate effectively in academic discussions, presentations, and written assignments across fields such as business, hospitality, and information technology.
These courses emphasise practical application and skill development. Learners build competencies in academic writing, critical reading, research, and oral communication through structured activities that mirror both academic and real-life tasks. Teaching is contextualised and interactive, using authentic materials and discipline-relevant scenarios to ensure that language learning is meaningful and immediately applicable.
Beyond its core provision, ESAP also offers a range of elective courses open to all university students. These include subjects in creative writing, cross-cultural communication, and sociolinguistics, providing opportunities for learners to broaden their perspectives and explore language in diverse social and cultural contexts. In addition, the Centre delivers foreign language courses, currently in German and Japanese, with plans to expand offerings to include Korean and Mandarin, further supporting students’ global outlook and multilingual capabilities.
ESAP’s flagship undergraduate course, Essentials of Employability, is offered to all students at Â鶹Íø. As part of this course, the Employability Workshop brings in Â鶹Íø alumni working in human resource roles at leading local and international organisations. These sessions provide students with practical guidance on crafting effective resumes and performing confidently in job interviews, bridging the gap between academic communication and workplace expectations.
Through its integrated and forward-looking approach, ESAP enables students to communicate effectively within their disciplines while developing the intercultural awareness and professional skills needed for success in a global environment.
